Clark Traffic School is offering a separate Drug and Alcohol class for the band. (This is the class needed to get your driver's license.) This is a good deal for us, as it will be held in the band room and will not conflict with any rehearsals.
Details:
When: October 14 2:00-4:00pm
Where: In the Bandroom
Cost: $35 cash, money order, Credit card, no checks.
You can walk in the day of the class, however if you want your certificate the day of the class, please give your form and money to Mr. Clark in room 3-27 by the end of the day before the class. You may be 14 and take the class. Questions? Call 321-230-1302

On behalf of our Band Aids service arm, we wanted to share this:
The Touchdown Club at WSHS is holding a BBQ dinner fundraiser before the game this Friday, 5:30 - 7:30pm. The meal is $10 each with all proceeds going to Coach Wenstrom's family (Melissa Wenstrom is an assistant principal at Lyman High School). Good food and great company! Tickets are available for a $10.00 donation. The menu is Pit Barbeque Roasted Pork - secret recipe makes it delicious, baked beans, Cole slaw, dessert, Tea or Water.
Please note: This good cause has generated a tremendous outpouring. The Lyman athletic office has 50 tickets to sell (unsure of current availability) and they may be able to get more. They will only have about 25 extra meals for walk-ups on Friday night. Tickets can also be obtained at the Winter Springs athletic offices.

Recently our website, www.lymanband.com, achieved 100,000 page views....not bad for a high school band website. We always like to keep things fresh and up-to-date and as we enter our 3rd year with the Lyman we want to try something new, creating a team of student volunteers. I am looking for several students who are interested in contributing to the website. Here is what I would like to add:
1 - Starting with Monday, I'd love to have a daily blog for band week from a student's perspective. This can of course continue into the school year, but for next week, I'd love for you to share your perspective on band camp, meeting new friends, funny things you saw happen, etc. I know there are some students who are quite creative, and I'd love to give you the opportunity to share your talents.
2 - Many of our students are quite talented in many areas outside of band...maybe participating in a sport, volunteering for a non-profit, excelling in academics or ??? I would love to have an occasional feature about selected students. It can be something like "10 Questions for Featured Student of the Month - What music do you listen to, Tell us about your favorite class, What are you thinking about for a future career, What's the funniest thing that ever happened to you in band......" You get the idea. I'm looking for nominations on people to feature and someone to do create the questions and do the interview.
3 - Artwork, photography, youtube videos, recipes, ?? If you are creative in other ways, the website can be an outlet to feature your work.
So if any of these interest you, especially the first item, send me an email (Mike at admin@lymanband.com) so that we can get rolling with it. This is an awesome opportunity and I hope we can give our students a fun opportunity to participate and maybe even become a blogging celebrity!

Band camp is here! Starting this week for dance, color guard, and percussion on Monday, for new marching students on Thursday, and for EVERYONE starting next Monday, August 10th! Students, please prepare by drinking lots of water, eating breakfast, and dressing appropriately for being outside (don’t forget the sunscreen!).
Friday, August 14th, is the premier show and pot luck. We're shaking things up a bit this year. Instead of the traditional pot luck dinner, we've decided to have a DESSERT pot luck instead. Families can bring a dessert of choice, based on the first letter of their last name.
Students with last name beginning:
A - C please send in cookies,
D - H send in brownies,
I - P cake or cupcakes, and
R - Z send in a d essert topping. (candy sprinkles, cookie crumbles, chocolate syrup, whipped topping...)
Band Camp postcard reminders are in the mail with complete information on band camp, pot luck, and premier show dates and times. If you haven't already received your band camp reminder, it should be arriving shortly. Of course, you can always check out the band web site for all band/dance/colorguard information!
We are also in need of donations of water bottles for camp, freeze pops and fruit that can be used as snacks or for those students who aren’t feeling well (grapes, watermelon, oranges, small apples, etc.). If you have any questions about this or when you volunteered to help out, please contact bandcamp@lymanband.com.
Shane’s Rib Shack in Uptown Altamonte is willing to help us out again. On Wednesday, Aug. 12th, 4 PM to close, Shane’s is giving Lyman Marching Band 10% of their total profits! This is a very generous offer and it is easy to earn some money for our students. We did this over the summer and didn’t earn as much as we had hoped (only $100), but I think we can do better. Save your receipts again, and bring them to the premier show. If we raise $300, we will put all the receipts in a hat and have a drawing for some gift cards. Remember that this is not just profit from Lyman students, but their total profit, so tell your friends, tell you neighbors to head over to Shane’s next Wednesday for some delicious dinner!
Also, remember that Moe’s is still offering us $1 for every text coupon that is redeemed. Just text “lyman” to 50240 and receive your text coupon. This can also be used by non-Lyman families, so tell your friends, tell your neighbors, and tell the people in line with you! Every little bit helps!

As a parent of a student participating in the Lyman Marching Greyhounds, you will at some point volunteer some time towards the success of our program. This might be through attending our booster meetings, working as a chaperone at band camp or at a football game, or helping to coordinate our fundraising efforts. (The list is of opportunities is pretty big.)
All volunteers must register as a Dividend with the Seminole School District. This is a very simple process which must be done EACH YEAR. The school district website is now available for the 2009 - 2010 school year. Please visit the following site to complete the process for the upcoming school year:
During the course of the school year, you also need to report your volunteer hours. We make it easy for you through a form that we have on our website: http://lymanband.com/id25.htm
Lyman High School earns credit for all hours you volunteer and we appreciate your submitting any hours on a weekly basis.
With close to 300 students in our program this year (WOW!), you can see how we really come to depend on our volunteers. On August 14th, you'll learn about and have a chance to sign up for the many volunteer opportunities that we have. It goes without saying that volunteering with the Marching Greyhounds is an extremely rewarding experience....you're a member of a very special community and you really have an opportunity to contribute to the development of our children.
Pre-camp for the Diamonds starts on August 3rd (8am - 5pm)!
Uniforms for Aug 3rd - 7th:
Mon - yellow practice top with blue shorts
Tues - blue practice top with grey shorts
Wed - Music 'N Motion top with black shorts (white tee if you don't have one)
Thurs - yellow practice top with blue shorts
Fri - blue practice top with grey shorts

It's a time of year when we're both happy for our new graduates and sad for those families who will be leaving us. But of course you're always a Greyhound! Here are some year-end housekeeping notes:
- Please follow-up with Lisa (treasurer@lymanband.com) concerning any outstanding accounts.
- Please submit remaining dividend hours that you have using our form: http://lymanband.com/id31.htm or by sending an email to dividendhours@lymanband.com
- If you wish to be removed from this mailing list, simply reply to this email with your request. Of course, we do hope you request that we move you over to our alumni mailing list. More than ever, Marching Greyhound alumni are getting more involved with our programs.
- If you would like to a profile posting added to the alumni page (e.g., what school you'll be attending, major, email address), you can also send that in.
- During the next month, most of the content from this year (photos/videos, highlights, etc.) will be moved to a 2009 Archive page. Its still a good idea to download special photos that you'd like to keep for your personal collection.
Finally, the Marching Greyhounds never really rest. As you know from prior emails, we are making the drive to register students for our Washington DC adventure. If you want to join the fun, we're working hard against the clock to submit an application for the parade....so we need to know who plans on going (making sure we have the right number and diversity of instruments/dance/guard). The application is here http://www.lymanband.com/Documents/DCSignup.pdf and we'd love for it to be sent in this week.
